Nordic Fest 2007 - Norwegian American Weekly Review

Here is a review of Nordic Fest 2007 from our friends at Norwegian American Weekly, who were also there handing out free copies of the Weekly along with their new magazine Norway.com Magazine.

Hostfest is an American Institution now - with guaranteed growth (thanks to the hard working staff) for years and years to come. However, there are many, many Scandinavian Festivals, Nordic Festivals and Heritage Festivals all over this country that deserve your support. These are the places to connect - not only to your past, but your present and your future. Over the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd, I had the pleasure of attending the Nordic Fest in the Tri-Cities of Richland, Pasco and Kennewick, Washington. The hundreds and hundreds of people that I met were fantastic - in fact, I think I have friends for life from that event. The dances that were danced, the music that was performed, the arts and crafts and gifts that were available were of the highest quality. And, one of the busiest exhibits at the Nordic Fest was the Genealogy Exhibit - where festival attendees spent an average of 20 minutes going through their family history and roots. It was fascinating to watch as people discovered where they came from in Norway!

The Nordic Fest has been in existence since 1999 - and it has grown each year. However, it could grow more - we just have to support these types of festivals and celebrations so that they continue to be a vibrant and healthy part of our heritage AND our future. That was what was so exciting about the Nordic Fest - it wasn't all about folks over 50 years old. Many, many families attended with small children - some dressed in Holiday costumes - doing dances, eating the ethnic food and learning more about their families. It was heartwarming to see.

I encourage you and your family to check out our Events Calendar in each issue of the Norwegian American Weekly for upcoming celebrations and festivals in your area. Save the date on your calendar and get ready for a great experience. You might be surprised by the fun you’re bound to have and the friendships that could stem from just one afternoon.

Even the Lutefisk Lunch at the Nordic Festival was memorable. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. (and, I haven’t tasted Lutefisk in over 50 years!)
